Persephone was a child of sunlight, destined to bloom like the earth itself. But when the ground opened beneath her, she was pulled into a world that sought to shape her, silence her, and claim her. Heavy Is the Crown is a story of endurance, resistance, and the power to reclaim one’s life.
Inspired by the myth of Persephone, this full-stage pole dance and aerial production brings each chapter of her journey to life, exploring themes of power, control, and transformation through breathtaking movement and storytelling. The show features performers from Leeds University Union’s Vertical Fitness Society, with sound and lighting supported by Backstage Society, creating an immersive theatrical experience.
All proceeds from the evening will support Basis Yorkshire, a charity dedicated to empowering and advocating for sex workers and people experiencing sexual exploitation. Basis Yorkshire provides safety, guidance, and life-changing opportunities for those too often pushed to the margins.
