Description

15th-century Red Tower, built in the southeast corner of the city wall, was part of medieval Uus-Pärnu fortifications and served as the town prison for centuries. It is the only surviving defense tower of Uus-Pärnu Hanseatic town and Pärnu's oldest preserved building. Since late 2020, it operates as a branch of Pärnu Museum's permanent exhibition, introducing the history of the former prison tower and medieval Pärnu. On the top floor, a new circular panoramic cinema screens the 10-minute animated film 'Merciless and Merciful History: In the Red Tower Through 15,000 Years,' focusing on geographical changes and city development from the Ice Age to present, including historical events. Ticket includes cinema session and optional short guided tour of the tower's history. Limited capacity: up to 30 minutes inside. Groups over 10 should contact in advance. Narrow steep stairs and high thresholds limit accessibility.
