Desert-blues for fans of Can and Pink Floyd to sink their teeth into. – MOJO

Live at KEXP (2023)

When Tamikrest was founded in 2006, all the musicians were in their early twenties. They hail from the region around Kidal, a city in northern Mali. They all attended Les enfants de l'Adrar school in Tinzavatene, a small oasis in the desert funded by European foundations. It was there that the future Tamikrest members received their basic musical training.

Awnafin

Their youth was shaped by the civil war that raged from 1990 to 1995. Many family members and friends perished as the Tuareg fought for their autonomy. When new unrest broke out in 2006, Ousmane Ag Mossa and his friend Cheick Ag Tiglia decided to draw attention to the Tuareg issue through music rather than weapons.

Amzagh

Tamikrest in Tamashek language means connection, link, knot, coalition. The group members come from different meridians (Mali, Niger, Algeria, and France). Wanting to fully embrace their Tuareg identity, they found ways in rebel music Ihumar to express that.

Tisnant an Chatma

In their youth, they played traditional Kel Tamashek music (the Tuareg's self-designated name) and songs of the Tuareg band Tinariwen, who in the eighties combined African traditional music with Western rock music. Through the internet and mp3 culture, Tamikrest's members discovered bands and musicians like Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, Pink Floyd, and Mark Knopfler who also influenced the formation of the group's unique sound.

Timtarin

A chance encounter with the American-Australian band Dirtmusic at the Festival in the Desert in 2008, held in Esakane (about 50 miles west of Timbuktu), led to friendship and musical collaboration. When Dirtmusic recorded their second album, BKO, in a studio in Bamako (Mali's capital city) in 2010, Tamikrest band members were invited to play on the album. Chris Eckman (Dirtmusic and The Walkabouts) also produced Adagh, Tamikrest's debut album.

*Live at AB (2021)

During 2010, both bands toured Europe together, playing at festivals such as Sziget and Orange Blossom Special held by their label Glitterhouse Records. In October 2010, Chris Ekman produced Tamikrest's second album titled Toumastin, which was released in April 2011.

*Aratan N Tinariwen (Live at 3voor12)

Through their songs' messages, Tamikrest aims to make Tamashek poetry and culture accessible to inhabitants of a world larger than the expanse of the Sahara desert.

*Fassous Tarahnet (Bamako, 2010)
