Turandot is Puccini's final opera, which, exhausted by a serious illness and death in 1924, he was unable to complete. It was finished two years later by the composer Franco Alfano. Wanting to move away from verismo, Puccini turned to the German adaptation of the legend of the cruel Chinese princess Turandot, which had previously been adapted by the Italian writer Carlo Gozzi, while the original story is based on an old 12th-century Persian epic.
