The play KNJAZ is dedicated to one of the most significant Serbian rulers – Prince Michael Obrenović III. KNJAZ illuminates the dramatic moments from the life of Prince Michael – a visionary and reformer who led Serbia on the path to modernization, but also a man torn between his state duties and personal passions. His premature tragic end – the assassination in Košutnjak in 1868 – represents one of the most mysterious episodes in Serbian history.
The play follows Prince Mihail's political and intimate conflicts, from his struggle with conservative forces, through his tragic love with Princess Julija and his forbidden affair with Katarina, to the personal dilemmas that shape him as a Balkan Hamlet—a character at a crossroads of duty and feeling, reason and emotion. This drama, based on historical sources, merges fact, poetry, and theatrical emotion, offering the audience a deep insight into the inner world of historical figures.
