Description

Tartu Üliõpilasteater's production 'Kuradi lood' (Devil's Tales) draws from folk tales where the devil is a cunning trickster and shape-shifter who operates on deceptive 'contract' logic. Unlike folklore's playful devil, this devil mirrors the ugliness of the human soul, exploiting weaknesses like greed, laziness, lust, pride, vanity, and vengefulness.

Central theme: 'selling one's soul' through ambiguous deals where short-term gain leads to eternal damnation or loss of self.

The devil's complexity unfolds: demonic tempter one moment, laughable fool the next, outwitted by wit. Blending clowning and Japanese kabuki-inspired elements, it portrays the devil's role in creation, battling evil and ugliness.

A 'course production' guided by mentors, offering hands-on experience to new actors and students in stagecraft, tech, and production.
