Celebrating their anniversary, Calefax revisits several high points. A definitive highlight was Dido & Aeneazz, an exceptional collaboration between trumpeter Erik Vloeimans and Calefax. The musicians bring a swinging energy to Purcell’s celebrated opera, blending the classical piece with musical styles like klezmer, calypso and jazz. Resisting the urge to move is practically impossible! In Dido & Aeneazz, Raaf Hekkema’s (Calefax saxophonist) adaptation of Vergil’s classic tragedy is infused with a brand new energy, thanks to newly composed pieces by Eric Vloeimans. Hedy Tjin’s illustrations visualize the vibrant music beautifully. ‘Calefax and Eric Vloeimans are doing the impossible,’ wrote Erik Voermans in the Dutch newspaper Het Parool.
