In the cycle Critics Have Chosen – the traditional exhibition that serves as a reception of contemporary visual art critics at the Art Gallery, continuously organized since 1967 – Sofia Milenkovic, art historian and recipient of the Lazar Trifunovic Award for 2020, curated the exhibition titled It's Just the End of the World for the year 2026. The exhibition features artists united by their interest in speculation about worlds that create a discontinuity with our empirical world experience and/or in exploring potential scenarios of a near or distant future. Embedded within methodological frameworks defined by concepts of science fiction, worldbuilding, and speculation, their works constitute various alternative realities and worlds (futures) primarily imagined as dystopias directed towards some form of downfall or emerging as a result of its consequences. Even when taking the form of a symbiotic utopia, their genesis is rooted in some of the urgent issues of today, such as the relationship between human and non-human, the dysfunctionality of dominant systems, and the omnipresence of technology. While drawing attention to these issues and prompting us to reflect on their causes and consequences, systemic and structural interconnectedness, as well as potential solutions, the gathered research also provides space for contemplating the ambivalent relationship we have towards them and the place they occupy in our everyday lives. Artists: Marija Avramovic and Sam Twydale, Pavle Banovic and Jelena Nikolic, Lidija Delic, Iva Kuzmanovic, Tamara Spalajkovic, Jakub Danjek and Daniel Rajmon.
