About the event: GLORIOUS FLORENCE, based on the text by British playwright Peter Quilter, tells the true story of Florence Foster Jenkins, the worst singer in the world, who was a beloved musical attraction in 1940s New York. Despite her inability to sing, Florence Jenkins became famous in the opera world. The play follows her life at the peak of her career, culminating in a performance at Carnegie Hall! The only problem was that Florence would casually dismiss every burst of laughter from the audience as professional jealousy. The audience was delighted by her “fantastic vocal abilities,” and for the concert of this tone-deaf soprano, extra tickets were always in demand. However, the story of Florence Foster Jenkins is a warm human story, as her immense love for music and eccentric enthusiasm were so infectious that they outweighed her lack of talent.
