Description
On Thursday 15 January, De Roma in Antwerp welcomes the Marmoucha Orchestra, together with Aziz Ozouss, for a special concert in celebration of Yennayer 2976, the Amazigh New Year. This festive period forms the backdrop for a performance that highlights the rich and diverse culture of the Imazighen – the Indigenous people of North Africa – with their deep-rooted traditions and sound. Marmoucha Orchestra Marmoucha Orchestra is made up of top musicians who bridge contemporary styles with musical traditions from Southwest Asia and North Africa. Under the artistic direction of Arin Keshishi, they create compositions that honour tradition while reinventing it with boldness and creativity. With numerous successful projects, the ensemble has developed a distinctive international sound that continues to evolve and inspire. Aziz Ozouss Aziz Ozouss, born in Biougra in southern Morocco, brings with him the music and poetry of the Amazigh tradition: the Ribab, the rhythms and melodies that echo between villages and mountains. In collaboration with the Marmoucha Orchestra, this repertoire takes on a new, fresh shape. Their interplay is open, curious, and effortless; it allows old and new influences to come together in a natural way. The result is a sound that remains familiar while always daring to move in new directions – the signature Marmoucha sound, honouring traditions while creating space for renewal. A musical journey through southern Morocco, full of rhythm, emotion, and freedom. The Amazigh New Year’s Concert is supported by the AFK (Amsterdam Fund for the Arts) and by FPK (Fonds Podiumkunsten).
