ABOUT THE ZAPATISTAS:

The Zapatistas are a large Indigenous political and militant movement in Chiapas, Mexico, known as the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN), who advocate for Indigenous rights, autonomy, and social justice, fighting against neoliberalism, capitalism, and globalization's negative impacts, especially concerning land, culture, and economic exploitation. Emerging in 1994 with an armed uprising against the Mexican state, they established autonomous zones with their own schools, healthcare, and governance, emphasizing communal self-rule and democracy from below.
