Born Emmett Ellis Jr. in rural Louisiana, he built his first guitar from household items and escaped farm life through music. He toured with Rabbit Foot Minstrels, adopted the name Bobby Rush, and settled in Chicago in the 1950s. He released singles on labels like Chess and ABC, earning the title King of the Chitlin’ Circuit.
