Description

Promotion of the novel The Truth about Mary (Archipelago, 2025) by Nina Savčić, opening with a quote from Paul Auster's Ghosts, dedicated to the victims of corruption, will take place on Monday, March 9th, starting at 7 p.m. at Parobrod. The fate of advertising and documentary film directors, the unnamed protagonist of this book shot on the streets of Dorćol, will be discussed by Milena Đorđijević, a literary critic, moderated by Katarina Lazić, editor of literary programs at Parobrod. Following the protagonist Johnny Goes to War by Dalton Trumbo, motionless, half-dead, a prisoner in his own body, the perforated artist-cyborg of this manuscript by Nina Savčić becomes a silent witness to the horrifying secrets of the staff meetings in the medical facility, in his room-prison. The Truth about Mary is a multi-layered narrative, with thriller elements, about an individual still holding a glimmer of hope for release from their own 'imprisonment'. Capable of hearing and thinking, but not moving, the author of this quest for truth of an individual within their own family but also a collective, from the first to the last page, points to the beginning of life in a post-institutional, dystopian society.
