Liv.e (pronounced Liv, the "E" and punctuation silent) is a rising star in the experimental-R&B genre, known for her expertly crafted music that fluidly traverses the spectrum from exuberant to laidback. The Dallas-born, Los Angeles-based artist's music often morphs and consistently defies categorization. Her unique style garnered the attention of Earl Sweatshirt, who invited her on tour, leading to her feature on his 'Feet of Clay' EP.
Her previous project, the 2018 'hoopdreams', was a medley of funk, soul, and Southern hip-hop influences tied together by hazy lofi production. Liv.e's more recent singles, 'Lessons From My Mistakes…' and 'Bout These Pipedreams,' exhibit a maturation in her songwriting with her voice coming to the fore, maintaining its esoteric edge while asserting itself more prominently.
Born and raised in Dallas, Liv.e had a well-rounded musical upbringing that exposed her to a wide range of genres, including gospel, jazz, R&B, and hip-hop. She credits these influences to her family, particularly her parents and older brothers. In her early years, she moved around a lot, and eventually found a home in Los Angeles, which she claims has been a significant factor in her coming-of-age and realization of independence.
Despite her travels and musical influences, Liv.e has made it clear that she doesn't crate dig for samples, but she does admit to making extensive use of jazz and other music that "make the soul say something" in her creations. She aims to surprise herself with her music, not necessarily the listener, preferring to defy formulaic norms and conventions.
Liv.e's upcoming album, 'Couldn't Wait To Tell You,' is expected to be a unique exploration of different points of view. Each song is written as a diary entry from a different character, all of which are facets of her personality. The album represents growth in her career, with her voice becoming clearer and less shrouded by production.
Her tour and collaboration with Earl Sweatshirt came about casually via Twitter. Liv.e expresses gratitude for the opportunity, lauding the humanizing effect of such interactions between artists. The tour was a learning experience for her, teaching her the importance of self-confidence in front of large crowds.
The creation of 'Couldn't Wait To Tell You' occurred before the tour in St. Louis, where she stayed with her mother after creating 'hoopdreams' in New York. The process of writing and recording the album took about a month, after which her tour performances helped refine her perspective on her music. This resulted in her embracing the power of her voice and her growing confidence, a transformation reflected in her music. As she journeys towards the release of her album, Liv.e is filled with pride, excitement, and gratitude, despite the demanding and exhaustive creative process.
