Refused are a Swedish hardcore punk band from Umeå, formed in 1991. Their classic lineup—Dennis Lyxzén (vocals), David Sandström (drums), Kristofer Steen (guitar), and Magnus Flagge (bass)—became known for fiercely political lyrics and a sound that challenged punk orthodoxy with experimental textures and unconventional arrangements.

Their 1998 album The Shape of Punk to Come mixed hardcore punk with jazz, electronic, post-hardcore, and ambient influences—polarizing on release but now regarded as groundbreaking. In 2003, Kerrang! ranked it #13 on their list of the 50 Most Influential Albums of All Time, cementing its reputation as a touchstone of modern punk .

After splitting shortly after the album’s release, Refused reunited in 2012 and again in 2014, returning with the albums Freedom (2015) and War Music (2019). The latter is a politically urgent record—brutal, precise, and unyielding in vision.

In 2024, lead singer Dennis Lyxzén suffered a heart attack, forcing cancellation of their farewell shows in Sweden. Fully recovered, the band mounted a final North American farewell tour in March–April 2025 titled “Refused Are F**king Dead,” celebrating the 25th anniversary of The Shape of Punk to Come with a remastered reissue and a covers album featuring artists like Idles, Quicksand, Zulu, and Gel .

Refused’s music remains fiercely unorthodox—sharp riffs, confrontational lyrics, genre-bending twists, and an uncompromising political stance. Their sound is urgent, abrasive, and unmistakably revolutionary: not just punk, but punk redefined.
